Policy - Securement of Common Wheelchair on Transit Vehicles
Revised December 2000
In the interest of safety and equal treatment of passengers, the Sheboygan Transit Commission does hereby declare that all Sheboygan Transit passengers using “common wheelchairs” as defined by USDOT Americans with Disability Act regulations, must allow their wheelchair to be secured at designated positions within an accessible bus in order to ride fixed route transit service. Passenger seats provided on the bus are secured to the bus and common wheelchairs, which serve as seats, must also be secured to the bus. Sheboygan Transit will deny service to a passenger using a common wheelchair who declines to permit his or her common wheelchair to be secured to an accessible bus with the securement devices provided. This policy does not apply to situations where an attempt has been made to secure the common wheelchair, but the common wheelchair cannot be secured or restrained satisfactorily by the bus’s securement system.
